Lucius Verus, AD 161-169. AE Medallion. (38 mm. 46,18 g.). AD 165, Rome. L AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS IMP II TR P V COS II, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left. Rev. Victory standing left, head right, holding palm in right hand, left hand extended to trophy, two captive Armenians or Parthians, one standing and one seated, at foot of trophy. COS date var of Banti 199, Gnecchi 30, Boston MFA 35.1465 (COS II). An exceptional and attractive medallion of two sestertii with a fine, dark green patina, a powerful military bust and a noble portrait of the emperor seen from behind. A special propagandistic reverse commemorating the successful military campagn against the Parthians into Armenia and lower Mesopotamia, Parthian wars 161-166 AD. The romans even sacked Ctesiphon, the Parthian capital. The Armenia became a Roman province and as readable on the obverse legend of this medallion Lucius Verus added the title ARMENIACVS. The same type as the Prinz Waldeck coin 576, which was bought by Wilbour and gifted to Boston, now in the collection as Boston MFA 35.1465. Same type as Gnecchi 30.
