Description

Boeotia, Tanagra. Augustus. 27 BC -14 AD. Æ (21mm,
6,00gr.). Bare head right; countermark: winged caduceus R/ The 3
Charites (Aglaia, Ephrosyne, Thaleia) standing facing, holding hands;
countermark: tripod BCD Boiotia 309b = RPC I 1316 Staal pp. 86 and
155, pl. 1, 6; for c/m: Howgego 388. VF and extremely rare (only 2 in
private hands)

Since the ancient Mycenaean times, Tanagra was a worship center of the
Cabeirian (Eleusis) mysteries! The
coin has two countermarks from the numismatic thematology of the city.
The winged caduceus that refers to
the two sanctuaries of Hermes (Hermes Promachos and Hermes Carneios)
and the tripod that refers to the
sanctuary and oracle of Apollo.
