Description

ROMAN INTAGLIO WITH BUCOLIC SCENE IN A GOLD RING

Ca. 100-200 AD
A black intaglio reveals a captivating bucolic scene imbued with intricate details. The composition of this scene portrays a harmonious blend of natural elements and human presence. To the left, an elegant tree, resplendent in its verdant splendour, serves as a tranquil backdrop against which a goat gracefully leans. The right side of the scene is occupied by a hunched male figure, his body adorned with the weariness of time, as he leans upon a sturdy staff for support. This particular intaglio is encased within a possibly later gold ring, characterized by a smooth, round-sectioned hoop. Exhibiting superb craftsmanship, the ring's adornment includes two meticulously rendered spheres positioned below the bezel cell. Bucolic scenes in Roman glyptic art hold profound significance, evoking a rich tapestry of cultural, social, and aesthetic implications. Such representations served as visual testimonials to the Romans' appreciation for nature, the countryside, and the virtues associated with pastoral life. These scenes functioned as a form of escapism from the bustle of urban life, offering solace and tranquility through the artistic portrayal of serene landscapes, gentle creatures, and contemplative figures. Repaired band.
