Cleopatra VII (36-31 BC) and Mark Antony. AE 23 mm. Chalcis ad Libanum mint, Syria. Dated 32-31 BC. [BACIΛICCHC KΛЄOΠA-TPA]C. Draped bust of Cleopatra right, wearing stephane; all within pelleted border. / ЄTOYC KA TOY [KAI C ΘЄAC NЄѠTЄPAC]. Bare head of Mark Antony right; all within dotted border. RPC 4771. Rouvier 440 (Berytus). SNG München 1006. SNG Cop. 382. AE. 8.10 g. 19.00 mm. RR. Very rare and fascinating issue. Reverse off centre. Green brown patina with reddish hues. VF. The city of Chalcis in Syria was part of the Eastern territories illegitimately bestowed by Mark Antony to his wife Cleopatra, mother to their children Helios and Selene. The propaganda machine of Octavian successfully used these grants against Mark Antony to win over the public opinion in Rome.
