Description

Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Tarentum. AR Nomos, c. 450-440 BC. Obv. Taras astride dolphin left, with extended arms; below, shell; to right, cicada. Rev. TAPAΣ. Oecist seated left, draped to waist, holding spindle and placing left hand on diphros; all within laurel wreath. Cf. HN Italy 845; Vlasto -; SNG Ashmolean 223 (same dies); Fischer-Bossert 140 (V75'/R95α). AR. 7.61 g. 23.5 mm. RRR. Extremely rare 'Oecist' group issue, even missing in Vlasto collection. VF.
