Ionian Islands, Venetian Authority, 1800-1807. Gazette, 1801, Garitsa (in Corfu) mint, variety with 1 star on the obverse and 2 dashes right and left from the denomination and dash on the left of the date (KM1).
Extraordinary quality for this extremely rare issue. Dark brown patina and excellent details are unusual for this series.
This coin comes from an issue of three copper coin denominations (1-5-10 Gazettes), minted in Corfu to facilitate money exchange during the very short (1800-1807) period of semi-independence of the Ionian Islands, guaranteed by Russia and Turkey, and allies. The example offered here is of the first (out of three) type with a Greek legend of the denomination on the reverse. Missing from most Ionian Islands collections. Graded AU55BN NGC.
