Description

Sicily, Tetras (?), Messana (as Zankle), c. 520-510 BC AR (g 0,24 mm 7 h 10) DANK, dolphin l. above, three pellets, around linear circle and dotted border, Rv. Nine-part incuse square with scallop shell in center. SNG Copenhagen - SNG ANS -. Extremely rare, old cabinet tone, not present in the publications consulted, extremely fine. The Chalkidian colony of Zankle acquired its name from its sickle-shaped harbor. The polis found itself betrayed by a group of Samian refuges in 493 BC, who had been invited to settle nearby after Samos fell to the Persians.
