Description

BOSNIA. Zlatnik of 4 Ducats, ND (1377), King Stephen Tvrtko I of Bosnia and Serbia, gold, early restrike (about 1935), RRR!
Tvrtko I Kotromanic (1338-1391), Ban of Bosnia (1354-1377), since 1377 king of Bosnia and Serbia, allegedly found 1935 in the fortress Milesevac near Prijepolje (South West Serbia). Since the nearby Mileseva Monastery is believed to be the coronation site of Tvrtko I, it can be assumed that the only known original piece of the also only Bosnian and Serbian medieval gold coin belonged to the coronation insignia of the ruler who was raised to the first king of the medieval Bosnian state. Due to the rough surface structure, which suggests the use of a rusty die, it does not seem impossible that in 1935 not only the coin itself, but also the original dies were found, which were then cleaned, slightly modified and used for minting of a few restrikes for museum purposes. In contrast to the original piece only known from publications, whose weight of 14.05g in 0.980 gold corresponded to a four-ducat piece, our piece weights 10g and is struck in 0.835 gold.
