EDWARD VI. Shilling ND (1551-53), THIRD ISSUE, Mint mark Tun, LONDON, silver, VF+
S.2482. The contemporary cross graffiti is typical for coins of this type. According to the prevailing opinion among collectors, these are protestations by Catholics against the state Anglican Church. German numismatics experienced a similar phenomenon in the 20th century, in which the Garrison Church 5 Reichsmark pieces (Jaeger 357) were engraved with slogans and symbols against the National Socialist regime. In both cases, large-format coins with empty areas in the design were chosen.
