Description

KINGS of BOSPOROS. Pharnakes II. Circa 63-46 BC. AV Stater (21mm, 4.17 g, 1h). Pantikapaion mint. Dated Bosporan Era 245 (53/2 BC). Diademed head right / BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛ-EΩN MEΓAΛOY ΦAPNAKOY, Apollo seated left on lion-footed throne, holding branch in extended right hand, left arm resting on kithara; tripod to left; to right, EMΣ (date) above monogram. Frolova & Ireland § 5, dies B/e, 4 = G&K 5; Anokhin 1304 (same dies as illustration); MacDonald 184/2 (same dies as illustration); HGC 7, 198; DCA 446; Adams III 2044 (same dies). Usual slightly weak strike and a little die wear. Good VF. Underlying luster. Very rare.
