PB Mysia. Cyzicus. Seal (c. 550–450 BC)
Obv: Forepart of cock left; below, tunny downward to left.
Rev: Blank.
The images that are widely known from the coins of Greek cities appear on seals and seal impressions in similar forms, if not the same. A selection of seal impressions illustrates images similar to those on coins. There is a mint from Cyzicus showing cocks with up-curved wings in a manner of griffins (D. Kaptan, Common traits on seals and coins of the Achaemenid period in an
Anatolian context, Varia Anatolica 12, 2000, 216. Cf. Von Fritze I 51; Greenwell 155; BMC 49). A cock in the same style on our seal and a tunny on the bottom as on the coins prove that this seal belongs to Cyzicus.
Weight: 7.45 g.
Diameter: 22.63 mm.
