Description

★ First Known Seal of Symeon, Metropolitan of Pessinus. ★

PB Byzantine seal of Symeon, proedros (metropolitan) of Pessinus (c. AD 1072)
Obv: St Kosmas standing at left, with his hands upraised towards the image of Christ above in the center. St Damian? is at right, making the same gesture of supplication. Both saints are in civilian garb. Traces of inscription on either side of the image of Christ: [Ἰ(ησοῦ)ς Χ(ριστό)ς]. Inscription in a column at left: ὁ ἅ(γιος) Κοσμᾶς. Illegible inscription in column at right. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription of five lines: + σφραγὶς προέδρου Συμεών Πισινοῦντος. Border of dots.
Translation: Seal of Symeon, proedros of Pessinus.
The metropolitan of Pessinus, Symeon, is known from the synod of 1072. He attended the synod convened by the patriarch, Ioannes VIII Xiphilinos at the church of Hagios Alexios on the election of bishops to vacant sees; see N. Oikonomidès, “Un décret synodal inédit du patriarche Jean VIII Xiphilin”, Revue des Études Byzantines 18 (1960), p. 57, 60; PBW Symeon 116. Ours is the first known seal of Symeon.
