AE Byzantine seal of George (AD 13th – 14th centuries)
Obv: St. John the Evangelist standing, turned three quarters, blessing with his right hand and holding a book in his left hand. On either side the inscription: ὁ ἅ(γιος) Ἰω(άννης) ὁ Θεολόγος. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription of six lines beginning with a cross: Γεώργιον σκέποις με, σεμνε παρθένε, λύχνος γεγώς μοι τοῖς ποσί, φῶς ταῖς τρίβοις. Border of dots.
Translation: St. John Theologos / Venerable Virgin, may you shield me, George, be a light for my feet, a light on all my ways.
