Description

PB Byzantine seal of Eudokia Maniakena protoproedrissa (AD 11th century, 2nd half)
Obv: Bust of the Mother of God orans, the medallion of Christ before her. Sigla on either side: Μ(ήτη)ρ Θ(εο)ῦ. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription of five lines: Θ(εοτό)κε β(οή)θ(ει) Εὐδοκίᾳ (πρωτο)προεδρίσ(σ)ᾳ τῖ Μανιακήνᾳ. Border of dots.
Translation: Mother of God. Theotokos aid Eudokia Maniakena protoproedrissa.

The owner of this seal was a female member of the Maniakes family, who was married to a husband bearing the court rank of protoproedros. The Maniakes family was a prominent Byzantine family during the Middle Byzantine period. The most famous member of this family was George Maniakes, who lived during the 11th century. He was a general and military leader of the Byzantine Empire. He is best known for his campaigns in southern Italy and Sicily against the Arabs during the mid-11th century.
