Description

★ ★ The first known example from Chios ★ ★

Ionia, Chios. AE. 2.07 g. - 13.56 mm. Circa 5th-4th centuries BC. Alkima-, magistrate.
Obv.: Sphinx seated left.
Rev.: AΛKIMA[...] / XI-OΣ. Two bands crosswise, flush with rest of design, on the horizontal one magistrate's name, and on the vertical one ethnic; all within vine-wreath tied below.
Ref.: Apparently unpublished in the standard references and probably this is the first known example. Cf. J. Mavrogordato, NC 1918, p. 107, 55 and vol. XV, pl. XIX, 18-19 var. (same type, unlisted diff. magistrate).
