Victoria "No L.C.W" 50 Cents 1870 MS62 PCGS, London mint, KM6. Variety without L.C.W. at truncation. A relatively low mintage for this first year of issue, the 1870 half dollars having been produced in two different obverse variants--with and without the designer's initial, LCW, on the truncation of the Queen's neck. This example, a prominent Mint State specimen, features desirable color, velveteen luster, and designs that have received an exacting strike. Presently, the PCGS census reports that only three coins of this variety have been certified at the Mint State level--this coin; an MS63 which was part of the Donald E. Bently Collection that we offered in our January 2014 NYINC sale and hammered for $7,000; and an MS64+, which was part of the Canadiana Collection that we sold in our 2016 April CICF sale and realized a hammer amount of $60,000. An altogether impressive coin that will likely generate much attention throughout the collector community. From the Walczak Collection
