Kansu. Republic Yuan Shih-kai Dollar Year 3 (1914) AU50 Details (Cleaned) ANACS, Lanchow mint, KM-Y407, L&M-617, Kann-759. With characters "Kan Su" to either side of the bust. A remarkably high grade for the type, even in spite of the details modifier, with the 'almost uncirculated' tier being among the finest attainable certification, and just one piece to-date certified Mint State by PCGS. Reportedly responding to the 1914 monetary order of the Treasury Department that mandated a uniformity of coinage throughout the country, the Kansu Yuan Shih-kai dollars quickly met with disapproval due to their two added characters and were rapidly removed from circulation. With the few surviving examples seeming to still have circulated at a discount, only a select few examples survive in comparatively fine grades. For comparison, another AU Details (Cleaned) specimen from PCGS hammered for $13,000 in 2019.
