Description

Pescennius Niger (AD 193-194). AR denarius (18mm, 4.38 gm, 7h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5. Antioch, AD 193-194. IMP CAES C PE-SC NIGER IVST AV, laureate head of Pescennius Niger right / FORTVN-A-E RE, Fortuna enthroned left, grain ears downward in right hand, cradling cornucopia on left arm. RIC -, cf. RIC IV.I 21 for reverse type. Very rare. See Nomos AS, Obolos 1 (8 February 2015), lot 335 for another example from the same dies. Deep cabinet toning on satiny surfaces.
