Central American Republic gold 2 Escudos 1843 CR-M XF40 NGC, San Jose mint, KM15, Fr-3, Stickney-C101. Mintage: 4,482. A challenging and highly sought-after date within this only 4-year series, and one which almost universally comes in low grades; none yet certify in Mint State, while the ex. Mayer, Eliasberg specimen graded AU58 and the ex. Pura Vida, Caballero de las Yndias example ranked as an AU55. Though rub has obscured the sunface and smoothed the stippled slopes of the mountains, this creates a strong visual contrast against the darker honeyed tone of the surfaces, while the margins themselves contain hints of residual luster. An absolute must for any series collector.
