Kirin. Kuang-hsü "Flower Basket" Dollar CD 1900 XF45 NGC, Kirin mint, KM-Y183, L&M-531, Kann-397, WS-0408, Wenchao-443. Flower Vase / Evergreen Basket type. Large Characters variety. Already a type which does not appear with any regularity on auction, the so-called "Flower Vase" emissions from the first few years of the 20th century stand as some of the most emblematic of Kirin's coinage, frequently demanding strong premiums when they become available. Commonly known as an issue that suffers from central striking weakness, the coin's trademark obverse (reverse as holdered) central motif is actually a vessel containing "immortality greens," meant to serve as a visual metaphor for the dynastic motto of the time, "Long live the Qing Dynasty." While a large number of examples appear white-washed or with minimal toning, this representative presents a pleasing frame of iridescent color in the margins, likely the result of longtime album storage, and certainly a few which marks it out from even its higher grade peers.
