Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Obol ND (864-877) MS61 NGC, Quentovic mint, Class 2, MEC I-888 var. (legends), MG-720 (same dies), Dep-813 (11 examples studied), Nou-182 var. (legends). 0.64gm. +CRΛTIΛ DI EI, Karolus monogram / +QVENTOVICI, cross pattée. A very rare mint-type, particularly in the quality seen here, with the overall visual appeal far exceeding the assigned grade. A die match for the specimen plated by Morrison and Grunthal, with Depeyrot reportedly only having known of 11 examples. Likely among the nicest to have come to market in recent years for this usually underappreciated denomination.
