Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-)( MS61 NGC, Besançon mint, KM-Unl., Gad-338 (unpriced), Dup-1638A, L4L-465 (R5). Short palms variety. Thoroughly impressive conditionally and of the utmost rarity, confirmed in L4L and with Gadoury's placement of dashes for value, the example at hand remains in a league of its own. Awash in harvest-gold patina that envelops fully struck-up devices, including the instantly recognizable interlinking Cs mintmark of Besancon, misattributed as a lone C for Caen by NGC. Regardless, we can find no instance of this highly important issue to have sold in recent memory, including in the sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, of which encompassed numerous examples in this very sale. As such, we expect an elevated level of bidding commensurate with this fact. Accompanied by a Wade Hinderling tag.
