Philip IV Counterstamped Cob 7-1/2 Reales ND (1652) VF20 NGC, Potosi mint, KM-C19.2, Mastalir-7ab-a/III--c (R2; this coin). 27.37gm. From the 1654 La Capitana shipwreck. Host: Philip IV Cob 8 Reales 1651 P-E (cf. KM19b, Cal-1491). Counterstamp: crowned L counterstamp (VF Weak). A very elusive re-tariffed type, counterstamped on a slightly corroded host which nevertheless shows a clear date, mintmark, assayer's initial, and denomination, struck on a comparatively round flan with only a small planchet flaw at the edge. One of just a small number we have handled, with just a handful more having appeared on auction in the last several decades. Plated on pg. 109 of the 2020 edition of Robert Mastalir Divisek's The Great Transition of the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652. Part B. Ex. Ponterio & Associates Auction 99 (April 1999, Lot 145)
