Description

Elizabeth II 5-Piece Lot of gilt copper-nickel Specimen Uniface Die Trial "Maple Leaf" 50 Dollars ND (1990) PCGS, 1) 50 Dollars - SP65, cf. KM191, DC-36 2) 20 Dollars - SP65, cf. KM190, DC-37 3) 10 Dollars - SP66, cf. KM189, DC-38 4) 5 Dollars - SP67, cf. KM188, DC-39 5) 1 Dollar - SP66, cf. KM238 (date unlisted), DC-40 Royal Canadian mint. Reeded edge. An exceedingly rare complete set of Reverse Trial Maple Leafs. According to Charlton, in 1990 the reverse hub of the Maple Leaf was redesigned to enhance the relief and veins of the leaf. These uniface trial "souvenir" pieces were struck as an introduction to the revamped Gold Maple Leaf design. What is perhaps interesting is that Charlton describes the composition of the five trial souvenir pieces as follows: copper 55.90%, nickel 18%, gold 16%, and tungsten 10.1% - whereas PCGS contends they are gold-plated copper-nickel. The first such set we have the pleasure of handling, and an unmissable opportunity for the dedicated collector of trial issues from the Royal Canadian Mint.
