Anne gold 5 Guineas 1709 AU58+ NGC, KM532, S-3567. OCTAVO edge. An immense offering of the type, and seemingly among the scarcest post-union issues to locate at auction, especially at this advanced tier of preservation. Auction records of the last two decades admit the second-lowest instance of occurrence, bested only by the 1713 date by only a handful of appearances. Prior to this selection, we have handled just two others of this date, both impaired and consistent in appearance with the vast majority brought to market. On offer is a conditional feat for not only this date, but of the series, distinguished by its expansive yet sensitively rendered portrait of Anne and reverse arms shaded in pleasing, uniform sun-gold. Each face carries ample mint brilliance, the obverse to the protected peripheries while the reverse posts up especially fine, featuring booming mint radiance at the slightest flick of the wrist. While light wisps to the low-lying expanses likely preclude an even finer assignment, advanced collectors of the series will be hard-pressed to locate anything considerably finer, noting only two examples submitted to either grading service ranking higher.
