Flanders. Charles II gold Ducaton (8 Souverain d'Or) 1694 AU58 NGC, Bruges mint, KM92 (Rare), Fr-229, Delm-567 (R4), Vanhoudt-703BG (R3). 44.29gm. An immense 17th century gold type featuring Carlos II (of Spain) that is of great rarity. The obverse strike is remarkably sharp, as nearly every detail from the flowing hair to the intricate garment are fully rendered. The reverse strike is nearly as complete as the obverse, but there is some slight softness to the highest points of the design, most notably on the faces of the two scowling lions. The large gold flan has toned evenly to a pleasant golden-honey color and has retained a nearly comprehensive lustrous glow. The faintest evidence of light handling and some scattered obverse adjustment marks may preclude a Mint State evaluation but they do not diminish the splendor of this treasure that is bound for the highest quality of cabinets.
