Republic Sun Yat-sen silver Specimen Pattern "Mausoleum" Dollar Year 16 (1927) UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Nanking mint, KM-Unl., Kann-609, L&M-85, WS-0130, Wenchao-898 (rarity 3 stars). Mintage: 480. By Richard Placht. Minted in Nanking with dies prepared in Vienna. An incredibly cherished issue with a riveting story. According to Kann, Placht never journeyed to China and engraved this Pattern while Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum was still under construction. The conjectured dies misrepresented both the mausoleum and the beloved statesman, with Kann even comparing the portrait to Paul von Hindenburg. The low mintage figure indicates that they were likely struck for presentation purposes as few survive to the present day. The current survivor is retoned in an interesting mottled umber, adding a mysterious character to an already-storied design. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
