People's Republic brass Proof Pattern "Great Wall Panda" 100 Yuan 1982 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM-Unl., Cheng-Unl., CC-Unl., PAN-pg. 7. 32mm. By Chen Jian. A rare gem of modern Chinese numismatics that is often absent from even the most comprehensive collections. Created as part of the initiative to develop a new bullion coin series, this particular Pattern presents the renowned Panda design to the obverse with the denomination to its right. However, it uniquely features the Great Wall to the reverse, unlike the Temple of Heaven design that was ultimately adopted for the Panda series. Although this reverse motif was not continued in the Panda series, it gained popularity in subsequent commemorative issues, including the "Empress of China" silver 5 Yuan from 1986 (refer to KM152), and most notably in the Dragon and Phoenix series starting in 1989/1990. To date, our records show five currently submitted to NGC, this with two others at the top spot and on the verge of technical perfection. With this in mind, we anticipate a strong showing for the modern Chinese trophy collector. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
