Hsüan-t'ung silver Pattern Dollar ND (1910) MS64 PCGS, Tientsin mint, L&M-24, Kann-219, WS-0036, Wenchao-98 (rarity 2 stars). One of a small handful of Pattern Dollars struck during the short reign of Hsüan-t'ung, here featuring the instantly recognizable reverse motif of the "water dragon." The present specimen endures as the largest denomination from a proposed series struck in accordance to currency regulations of the Board of Revenue, with the expectation of being released for circulation. While ultimately abandoned, the series would gain notoriety with collectors, especially at the largest denomination and so fine. An icon of this period of numismatics, further elevated by a gentle peach underglow and frosty elements, all pointing to an impressive level of preservation confirmed by a near-Gem conditional assignment. Certainly a great rarity when located this fine and with so much palpable eye appeal. Ex. W&B Capital Collection HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
