Yunnan. Republic T'ang Chi-yao gold 10 Dollars ND (1919) AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Kunming mint, KM-Y482. LM-1057, Kann-1524, WS-0652. Variety with "1" below the flag tassels. According to Kann, these coins were minted in response to the surge in silver prices in 1919. However, with an estimated mintage of around 900,000 pieces and the decline in silver's value in the years that followed, many of these 10 Dollar coins were eventually melted down to recover their gold content. Though lightly cleaned as noted on the holder, the features of T'ang's portrait are complete and expressive. A covetable issue in all grades, and an essential addition to any cabinet of rare provincial Chinese gold issues. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
