Dong Khanh gold 5 Tien (1/2 Lang) ND (1885-1889) AU58 NGC, KM-Unl., Sch-Unl., S&H-Unl., cf. CMV-522 (in silver). 18.56gm. A rare type struck in gold, issued under the brief reign of Dong Khanh, who ruled just 4 years from 1885 to 1889, dying at the early age of 24. It is difficult to talk about the quality of this example "for the type", as there are exceedingly few examples to compare to, with none that we have seen. However, one cannot help but admire the visual appeal that this specimen offers. The fields demonstrate original luster, softly expressed due to the textured nature of the surfaces. A deeper golden tone embraces the devices, all of which show little actual wear, which, in conjunction with the nearly pristine fields, conveys an impression of quality that seems high even for the admirable assigned grade.
