Stephen (1135-1154) Penny ND (c. 1136-1145) XF Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Mint and moneyer largely obscured (possibly Erebald on Eden, Bertold on Richmond, Reinald on Lincoln, or Wulfwold on Southwark), Cross Moline (Watford) type, S-1278, N-873. 19mm. 1.30gm. Crowned and diademed bust of Stephen right, scepter in right hand held before / LD • ON •, cross moline with fleur in each angle. A very rare monarch to locate coins of at all, the present offering admittedly displaying the usual peripheral weakness of Stephen's coinage, though quite strongly defined towards the centers with a very refined bust for the series. Probably finer than the given grade suggests, and a must for English collectors. Sold with old collector's envelope. From the Morris Collection
