Description

Anatolian Beyliks - Aydin. Anonymous gold Imitative Ducat ND (c. 1367-1372) MS64 NGC, cf. CNI-VIIa.38-44 (for prototype), A-Unl., Ives-Unl., cf. Stahl, "The Fourteenth-Century Ducats of the Emirs of Aydin", pg. 312, Coin 5. Imitating a gold Ducat of Andrea Dandolo (1343-1354). ANDR DAND • VIO | • Ƨ | N | V • | Є | И | Є | T • | I / • SIT T XP • Є DAT' • OT • V | RЄGIS ISTЄ • DVCAT'. An absolutely stunning coin by all measures, the level of workmanship certainly indicative of an expert die cutter, with the figures expressive and silhouetted by stark die polish. Certainly conforming to the standards laid out by Alan Stahl for Aydin imitations, the attention of detail reportedly fooling multitudes of Levantine merchants, and only fully diagnosable by seasoned merchants of Venice. Understandably listed as a standard emission of Andrea Dandolo on the holder.
