Description

Justinian I the Great (AD 527-565). AV solidus (21mm, 4.48 gm, 6h). NGC MS 3/5 - 4/5, die shift, clipped. Constantinople, 8th officina. D N IVSTINI-ANVS PP AVG, cuirassed bust of Justinian I facing, wearing helmet with pendilia, globus cruciger in right hand, shield decorated with horseman motif in left / VICTORI-A AVGGG H, angel standing facing, long staff terminating in staurogram in right hand, globus cruciger in left; star to right, CONOB in exergue. Sear 140. Although the holder describes the coin as clipped, it is full weight. If there is evidence of clipping on the edge, it would have been done at the mint to bring the flan within spec.
