Description

Hadrian, Mislabeled Denarius Die. Denarius; Hadrian, Mislabeled Denarius Die; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 120-1 AD, Denarius, 2.70g. RIC-p.43, pl. II.10 (same dies); BMC-268 note; RSC-601e. Obv: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG Bust laureate r. with bare chest seen from front and fold of cloak on l. shoulder. Rx: FELIC - AVG across field, P M - TR - P - C - O - S III around, Aeternitas standing l. holding busts of Sol, radiate, and Luna, with crescent atop head. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection. The engraver of this reverse die made a mistake: having rendered the figure of Aeternitas holding busts of the Sun and the Moon, he then mislabeled the type FELIC - AVG instead of the correct AETER - AVG. A denarius showing this engraver's error first came to light, fortunately with a photograph, in Mouchmov's Reka Devnia Hoard Report of 1934; ours is from the same dies on both sides and may be only the second example recorded.Planchet irregularity at 11 o'clock.
