Description

Hasmoneans, Hyrcanus II (?); 67 and 63-40 BCE, Prutah, 2.45g. TJC type T, Hendin-478. Obv: Paleo-Hebrew legend in wreath Yontan the High Priest and the Community of the Jews, Rx: Two cornuacopiae meet at base, pomegranate between them, they are adorned by grain and other agricultural products. Although not clearly visible on this example, all of the coins of this type have been struck over earlier coins of Alexander Jannaeus. Since the Hebrew name changes from Yehonatan on the previous coin to Yontan on this type, it has been suggested that this coin was from a later ruler. However, an article to be published in the 2009 volume of Israel Numismatic Research (Volume 3) by David Hendin and Ilan Sachar uses a new discovery to prove quite solidly that this is in fact a coin of Alexander Jannaeus and not a successor such as Hyrcanus II.
