Description

Bushnell, Charles I. A NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF LEVI HANFORD, A SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION. New York: Privately Printed, 1863. 8vo, later blue cloth, gilt. Lithographic frontispiece portrait on tinted background with tissue guard; title printed in red and black; 80, (2) pages; additional lithographic portrait, depicting Mrs. Hanford, printed on a tinted background. Unopened and generally fine. One of several first-person accounts of the Revolutionary War published in annotated editions by numismatist Charles Bushnell. Most of these narratives were of Americans taken prisoner by the British, and describe in detail the hardships endured by them in captivity. Bushnell conducted real research in this area, and his editions, printed in very small numbers, are often as interesting for his annotations as they are for the original autobiographical accounts themselves. In this case, Bushnell's notes occupy pages 51-80. A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Levi Hanford is one of the Bushnell monographs included in his famous compendium Crumbs for Antiquarians. Howes B1042.
