Phillips, Henry, Jr. HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF THE PAPER CURRENCY OF THE AMERICAN COLONIES, PRIOR TO THE ADOPTION OF THE FEDERAL CONSTITUTION. FIRST SERIES. CONTINENTAL PAPER MONEY. HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF AMERICAN PAPER CURRENCY. SECOND SERIES. Roxbury: Printed for W. Elliot Woodward, 1865–1866. Two volumes. 8vo, contemporary black half morocco with marbled boards; spines with five raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; top page edges gilt; marbled endpapers. (2), v, (5), (11)–233, (1) + (2), (v)–vi, (4), (11)–264 pages; titles printed in red and black. Ex Cole Nevan Danehower, with his signature and blindstamp on initial blanks. Front board of second volume sunned; leather slightly restored; a fine and attractive set. No. 38 of 253 copies issued, first volume initialed by Woodward. The second issue of the first edition of this still essential reference work, correcting "the strange error on page iv, Preface, whereby St. Louis is located in Indiana." The first volume consists of monographs on the colonial paper money of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Vermont written by Phillips, and a reprint of Elisha Potter's work on Rhode Island. The second volume comprises Phillips' work on continental paper money. Phillips's groundbreaking work is underappreciated today, but is still consulted with profit. Sets tend to be encountered the worse for wear: this set is unusually nice. Rarely encountered with the volumes bound separately. Bibliotheca Munselliana page 139 (listed under 1865). Clain-Stefanelli 13311*. Davis 839. McKerchar 2127. Sigler 2030, 2037 and 2038. Ex Kolbe & Fanning's 2014 Fixed Price Catalogue, Listing 86.
