Description

SNG Great Britain: Lockett

Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum. SYLLOGE NUMMORUM GRAECORUM. VOLUME III: THE LOCKETT COLLECTION. PART I: SPAIN–ITALY. (GOLD AND SILVER). [bound with] PART II: SICILY–THRACE. (GOLD AND SILVER). [bound with] PART III: MACEDONIA–AEGINA. (GOLD AND SILVER). [bound with] PART IV: PELOPONNESE–AEOLIS. (GOLD AND SILVER) [bound with] PART V: LESBOS–CYRENAICA: ADDENDA. (GOLD AND SILVER). London: Published for the British Academy, 1938–1949. First editions. Five parts, complete, bound in one volume. Folio, later tan quarter morocco with brown sides; spine with two raised bands, lettered by hand; brown endpapers. 64 fine plates depicting 3542 coins, accompanied by introductory and descriptive text. Spine rubbed; contents near fine. A complete first edition set of this important SNG volume, as published in five fascicles. In the preface to the first fascicle, editor E.S.G. Robinson wrote, “It is a general collection of the old-fashioned type, formed in the tradition of Bunbury and Hermann Weber, not confined to any one district of the Greek world yet abounding in long series and in fine coins.” Clain-Stefanelli 1913*. Daehn 1306. Kroh 13 (four stars): “This was a private collection and the quality is very good with the scope focused on artistic style.” A Note from the Collector: The Lockett collection, sold later in a series of Glendining auctions, included some excellent Greek autonomous bronzes that were not included in the publication and were sold in unillustrated group lots. The late Douglas Mitchell from Baldwin’s had an uncanny ability to remember collector “hands” and would occasionally spot a Lockett autonomous bronze from its ticket. Sadly, none turned out to be from this collector’s areas.
