Young, James Rankin. THE UNITED STATES MINT AT PHILADELPHIA. ILLUSTRATED. Philadelphia: For Sale by Capt. A.J. Andrews, Odd Fellows’ Temple, 1903. Small 4to, original red cloth lettered in white; printed illustration of the Mint building mounted on upper cover. 96 pages, including 9 pages of advertisements at the end; numerous halftone illustrations in the text. Binding a bit worn and discolored; very good. Scarce. Clearly, its intended customers were tourists visiting the newly constructed Philadelphia Mint building, and the work was designed to take the place of the venerable Evans mint histories. For whatever reason, it did not meet with success. Only this one edition was published, and the initial printing must have been small. In reality, it was not a mint history but a pictorial record with brief accounts of the various Mint departments. Today, it is important as the only known source of detailed contemporary illustrations of the third Philadelphia Mint building, derived from photographs taken shortly after construction.
