Mercanti, John M. ORIGINAL PLASTER MODELS FOR BOTH SIDES OF THE MEDAL STRUCK FOR THE 2004 AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION CONVENTION. Each model measures 29 cm in diameter and is 2.5 cm thick. The obverse depicts a soldier to the left of a plan of Fort Duquesne, with 1754 below and legends reading FORT DUQUESNE LA PORTE À L’QUEST and PITTSBURGH, PA. The reverse celebrates the three local club sponsors, PAN, PNS and WPNS, with an ANA logo in the center and legends reading AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION and PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA AUGUST 18–22, 2004. Obverse initialed by the artist; both edges signed by the artist in marker and dated 4/29/04. Both models well-preserved. Two plaster models for the medal produced for the 113th ANA Convention held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2004, designed and executed by John Mercanti, who at the time was an engraver and sculptor at the United States Mint. He would be appointed Chief Engraver in 2006. On a local level, the medal commemorated the 250th anniversary of the 1754 construction of the French Fort Duquesne at the site that would become Pittsburgh. The obverse legend is unfortunately misspelled: the phrase intended is “la porte à l’ouest” [the doorway to the west]. A striking piece of ANA Convention memorabilia. Ex Wayne Homren Library (Homren served as General Chairman of the convention).
