Walter, David L. MEDALLIC MEMORIALS OF THE GREAT COMETS AND THE POPULAR SUPERSTITIONS CONNECTED WITH THEIR APPEARANCE. New York: Scott Stamp & Coin, 1893. Small 4to, later tan full morocco; spine with two raised bands, lettered in brown; brown endpapers. 55, (1) pages; 5 lithographic plates. Spine rubbed; title page with tape repair; very good or better. A rarely offered work, describing several ancient coins depicting historical comets, but primarily focusing on medals of the 16th through 19th centuries that feature comets and related phenomena. In a 1915 sale, Tom Elder offered no fewer than 93 copies of this work, apparently remainders from the American Numismatic Society. What happened to this supply is unknown to us, but this is only the second copy we’ve offered at auction in over 20 years.
