Description

M. Aemilius Scaurus and Pub. Plautius Hypsaeus, 58 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.06 g, 6 h), Rome. M•SCAVR / AED•CVR / EX - S•[C] / REX ARETA[S] Nabatean king Aretas kneeling right, holding olive branch and reins of camel standing beside him. Rev. M•SCAVR / AED CVR / CAPTV / C•HVPSAE•COS / PREIVE Jupiter in quadriga left, holding reins in his left hand and hurling thunderbolt with his right; below horses, scorpion. Babelon (Aemilia) 9 and (Plautia) 10. Crawford 422/1b. RBW 1519. Sydenham 912. Beautifully toned. Struck from a somewhat worn reverse die and with a tiny test cut on the edge, otherwise, good very fine.
