★ An unusually clear signature of the master engraver Aristoxenos ★
LUCANIA. Metapontion. Circa 375 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 7.72 g, 2 h), signed by Aristoxenos. Head of Demeter to left, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace and with her hair bound by an ampyx in the front and a sphendone ornamented with stars in the back; on neck truncation, APIΣTO; behind, stalk of barley. Rev. META Ear of barley with six grains and leaf to left. Basel 140 ( this coin ). HN Italy 1521 corr. (no symbol on reverse). Noe 435 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 333 ( same dies ). Beautifully toned and in exceptional condition for this important issue, with an unusually clear signature of the master engraver Aristoxenos. The reverse a bit weak, otherwise, good very fine.
