★ A rare 12 nummi of Constans II from Alexandria ★

Constans II, 641-668. 12 Nummi (Bronze, 22 mm, 7.70 g, 7 h), Alexandria, September-November 641 or late 645-May 646. Constans II standing facing, wearing crown surmounted by cross, holding long cross with his right hand and globus cruciger in his left. Rev. Cross potent on globe between I and B; in field to left, pellet; in field to right, pellet; in exergue, AΛЄΞ. DOC 105. MIB 189. SB 1027. Rare. Traces of overstriking (?) on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed in Ticino from the 1970s to 2000s.

This interesting issue was struck either in the short time period between Constans' accession to power in September 641 and the fall of Alexandria to the Arabs in November of the same year, or in late 645 to May 646, when the Byzantines briefly regained control over the city.
