Forces of Galba in Spain. In the name of Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.41 g, 7 h), uncertain mint in Spain. Group A.I, 3 April-2nd half of June 68. [CAESAR] AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Augustus to right. Rev. [D]IVVS - IVLIVS Sidus Iulium: eight-rayed comet with tail downwards. BMC 49. CG 146.2 ( this coin ). Cohen 98 (Augustan prototype). Martin A 10. Nicolas A8. RIC 92. Very rare. Somewhat rough and struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, privately acquired from H.J. Berk in September 1993.
Stylistic comparison shows that this and the following two coins are closely connected to Group I (lots 1001-1004 above, note the prominent staring eyes). In fact, the style of this denarius is so similar to lot 1001, the EID MAR issue, that it is very likely that at least the obverse die was cut by the same artist.
