Description

LYDIA. Sardes (?). 4th century BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.71 g, 1 h). Head of Dionysos to left, wearing wreath of ivy and fruit. Rev. 𐤮- 𐤱 ('s-f' in Lydian) Kantharos. Brackmann, Autonome Chalkoi aus der Satrapenhauptstadt Sardeis?, Geldgeschichtliche Nachrichten 215 (2003), S. 252-3. GRPC Lydia -. Leu Web Auction 8 (2019), 400. Vögtli, Pergamon 524. Slightly rough and with minor pitting, otherwise, very fine.

The Lydian legend 𐤮-𐤱 ('s-f' in Lydian) indicates that this issue was possibly struck at Sardes, which was called 'Sfard' in Lydian.
