ISLAMIC, Persia (Post-Mongol). Safavids. Abu'l-Muzaffar Isma'il I, AH 907-930 / AD 1501-1524. 1/4 Shahi (Silver, 20 mm, 2.54 g, 5 h), 2nd silver standard (AH 924-927 / AD 1518-1521), Mashhad, undated. Shiʿa kalima in a central pointed hexafoil, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh Muḥammad rasūl Allāh ʿAlī walī Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Ali is the friend of Allah’ in Arabic); the names of the twelve shiʿa imams in Arabic in the six sections around. Rev. In a central rosebud cartouche, ‘ḍarb Mashhad’ (‘Struck in Mashhad’ in Arabic); the king’s full titulature around, ‘al-Sulṭān al-ʿĀdil / al-Kāmil al-Hādī al-Wālī Abu’l-Muẓaffar / Shāh Ismāʿīl Bahādur [Khān]’ (‘The Sultan, the Just, the Perfect, the Guide, the Governor, Abu’l-Muzaffar Shah Ismaʿil Bahadur [Khan]’ in Arabic), followed by ‘khallada Allāh mulkahū wa [sulṭānahū]’ (‘May Allah perpetuate his kingdom and sovereignty’ in Arabic).
