Description

★ A 'Judaea Capta' issue from the Koinon of Bithynia ★

BITHYNIA. Koinon of Bithynia. Titus, as Caesar, 69-79. Tetrassarion (Orichalcum, 29 mm, 13.16 g, 1 h), M. Maecius Rufus, proconsul. AYTOKPA TITOΣ KAIΣAP ΣE[BAΣ YIOΣ] Laureate head of Titus to right. Rev. [EΠI M M]AIKIOY POYΦOY ANΘYΠATO[Y] Palm tree; to left, cuirass with helmet and two spears; to right, round shield and two spears. RG 16. RPC II 604. SNG von Aulock 6910. Rare. An unusually attractive example of this historically important issue. Retoned and with some areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

The reverse of this issue alludes to Titus' involvement in the First Jewish War, in the course of which he captured and destroyed Jerusalem and the Second Temple in 70 CE.
