A Great War R.A.F. and WW2 Home Guard Officer’s Group of 3 awarded to Major E. A. Hearne. Commissioned from the ranks of the London Scottish to serve as Second Lieutenant in Royal Air Force late in the Great War, in WW2 he was the awarded the M.B.E. for ‘Meritorious Service’ with serving the M.T. Column, East Central District, Home Guard, comprising: British War and Victory Medals, 1914-1919 (2/Lieut. E. A. Hearne. R.A.F.); Defence Medal, 1939-1945, unnamed as issued; Group loose, with riband bar showing M.B.E. entitlement, WW2 transmission slip, R.F.C. cap badge, and Army Reserve of Officers lapel badge, in silver, dated 1939, toned, nearly very fine (9). M.B.E. (Military): London Gazette: 5 December 1944 – ‘for Meritorious Service in the Home Guard’. Major E. A. Hearne M.B.E. served initially served in the Great War with the 14th (London Scottish) Battalion, London Regiment, but he was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant (temp.) into the Royal Air Force in March 1918. He was confirmed as Second Lieutenant (Observer Officer) on 7 October 1918, and was discharged from further service on 3 March 1919. After the Great War he worked as a Motor Engineer (and partner) of Binfield’s in Beaconsfield, and given this experience, upon the outbreak of war in 1939 he was recalled to service in WW2. Joining in the Home Guard, he served in the Motor Transport Column, East Central District. For these services he was appointed M.B.E. in December 1944.
